Instructions:

  1. If using TVP, rehydrate it according to the package instructions. If using tofu, press it to remove excess moisture, then cut it into long, thin strips resembling the shape of the desired barbecue meat.
  2. In a bowl, mix together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, vegetable oil, sugar, rice wine or sherry, five-spice powder, and sesame oil. Optional: Add a few drops of red food coloring if you want the meat to have a reddish appearance like char siu.
  3. Marinate the tofu or TVP strips in the sauce mixture for at least 30 minutes, or overnight in the refrigerator for more flavor.
  4. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
  5. Place the marinated tofu or TVP strips on the prepared baking sheet, reserving any remaining marinade.
  6. Bake the strips in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are browned and slightly caramelized, basting them occasionally with the reserved marinade.
  7. Once cooked, remove the vegetarian Hong Kong-style barbecue meat from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
  8. Slice the meat into thin pieces and serve it as a standalone dish, in rice or noodle dishes, or in steamed buns (bao).
